The number on the wrapper and the number you get are different, and the gap between them is not random. It is made up of five things: how the attic breathes, how the eaves handle ice, which way the slope faces, how the shingles were installed, and what the word “lifetime” means in the warranty you were handed.
What the independent numbers say
The most widely cited independent figures come from the NAHB and Bank of America’s Study of Life Expectancy of Home Components, which puts asphalt shingles at about 20 years, modified bitumen at 20, wood shake and shingle at 30, simulated slate at 50, and real slate at 50 or more. NAHB is careful to say the table is a general guideline rather than a warranty or a prediction about any individual product.
Elsewhere: the Metal Construction Association’s service life assessment concluded an unpainted 55% Al-Zn coated steel standing seam roof can be expected to last in excess of 60 years, and cites a general 40 to 60 year range across metal systems. The EPDM Roofing Association states properly designed, installed and maintained EPDM has an expected service life of 38 years, and its 2025 survey of 569 roofing professionals reported expectations from about 25 years to more than 40, depending on membrane thickness and attachment.
Those are national figures. No credible source publishes a Michigan-adjusted service life, and anyone who quotes you one is guessing. What is defensible is the mechanism: the Great Lakes region averages roughly 42 freeze-thaw cycles a year, according to the University of Michigan’s GLISA program, and each cycle works water into whatever gap already exists. That pushes real-world results toward the bottom of any published range rather than the top.
What “lifetime” means on a shingle warranty
This is the most common misunderstanding we run into, and it is worth reading the actual document rather than the brochure.
Take GAF’s shingle and accessory limited warranty as a published example. “Lifetime” there means as long as you, the original owner, own the property, with coverage transferable once under stated conditions, and it applies to single-family detached residences only; other building types get 40 years instead. Inside that period there is a Smart Choice Protection Period, which is the non-prorated window: 10 years on most shingles, 5 years on Royal Sovereign and Marquis WeatherMax. After that window, remedies are prorated, reduced to reflect the use you have received, calculated from months elapsed against total warranty months.
So “lifetime” is a term of ownership, not a prediction of service life, and the full-value part of it is measured in single-digit or low-double-digit years. That is not a criticism of any manufacturer; it is how these documents are written across the industry. Read yours, and ask two questions of any contractor: which shingle line is this, and what is the non-prorated period?

What actually shortens a roof here
1. Attic ventilation
This is the biggest single variable, and it is invisible from the driveway. ARMA states plainly that proper ventilation helps ensure the maximum service life of roof assembly materials, and that without it there is risk of premature roofing failure and shingle buckling as the deck moves. IIBEC lists optimising the service life of the roof covering as one of ventilation’s three core functions, along with minimising ice damming and reducing roof deck temperature.
The rule gets quoted wrong constantly. The code baseline is one square foot of net free ventilating area for every 150 square feet of vented space. The familiar 1/300 figure is the exception, permitted only when its conditions are met, including proper distribution between high and low vents. Intake and exhaust should be roughly equal, and where they cannot be balanced, ARMA advises erring toward more intake, since most attics are short on it. A ridge vent above blocked or painted-over soffits ventilates nothing and pulls conditioned air out of the house instead.
2. Ice at the eaves
The Department of Energy’s building science guidance sets out the three conditions an ice dam needs: snow on the roof, a poorly air-sealed or poorly insulated attic, and freezing temperatures. A roof that dams every winter is being asked to hold standing water at the eave for weeks at a time, and shingles are a water-shedding product. The eave courses on a house that dams annually age visibly faster than the rest of the roof, and the same ice usually takes the gutters and fascia with it over a few seasons.
3. Orientation
South and west elevations take the most solar load and age fastest. North elevations stay damp and shaded, which is where algae discoloration shows first — an appearance issue rather than a structural one, per ARMA, and one that cleaning only temporarily resolves.
North slopes also matter at installation. IBHS found that among winter-installed, north-facing test panels, only three of ten reached a failure wind speed of 110 mph or higher, despite the product carrying an ASTM D3161 Class F rating, because the sealant strip had not fully bonded.
4. Colour
Colour changes how hot the roof gets. The Department of Energy notes that conventional roofs can reach 150°F or more on a sunny summer afternoon, while a reflective roof under the same conditions could stay more than 50°F cooler. Heat drives the asphalt’s loss of volatiles over time, so a dark roof over a poorly vented attic is a harsher environment than a light roof over a well-vented one. Colour is a real factor; it is a smaller one than ventilation, and it should not be the reason you pick a shingle you dislike.
5. Installation quality and timing
The strongest evidence on this comes from IBHS, which found the most important factor in high-wind performance for self-sealing asphalt shingles is the strength of the seal between shingles. Sealant is temperature-activated: IBHS observed it becoming tacky on summer-installed shingles once temperatures exceeded 140°F, while winter installations took up to 12 weeks to seal completely on some products.
Manufacturers permit cold-weather work with procedures. GAF recommends above 40°F for easiest handling, allows installation below that when the mandatory precautions are followed, and specifies hand-sealing with quarter-sized dabs of approved roofing cement under each tab plus temperature-controlled storage beforehand. GAF states the warranty is unaffected if those cool-weather provisions are followed. The trade-off is real and worth stating: a winter roof is a good roof if it is done properly, and it may spend its first weeks less resistant to uplift than the same roof installed in June.
Realistic expectations, stated honestly
Put together, that gives a defensible way to think about your own roof. A well-installed architectural asphalt roof over a properly air-sealed, correctly vented attic, on a house with sound decking and a working ice barrier, should reach the published expectation and can exceed it. The same shingle over blocked soffits, on a house that dams every winter, will not, and the failure will start at the eaves and the south slope.

Roof lifespan questions
My shingles have a 30-year warranty. Will the roof last 30 years?
Treat those as separate things. A 30-year label describes a warranty structure rather than a service life prediction.
Does a “lifetime” shingle mean I will never replace it?
