Gutters in a Michigan Winter: Ice Loading, Damage and What Helps

Every February, someone calls about a gutter hanging off the front of the house and asks what went wrong with the gutter. Usually nothing did. The gutter was carrying a load it was never designed for, delivered by a problem that starts in the attic and ends at the eave — and understanding which part of that chain to fix is the difference between solving it and repeating it next year.

Ice in the gutter is the last link in the chain, not the first

The Department of Energy’s building science work sets out the mechanism plainly. An ice dam needs three conditions at once: snow on the roof, freezing temperatures, and a poorly air-sealed or poorly insulated attic. Warm indoor air escapes into the attic, warms the underside of the roof deck, and melts snow from below. That meltwater runs down the slope until it reaches the cold eave — the overhang beyond the heated wall, with no warm air under it — and refreezes there.

The gutter is simply the object sitting at that spot. It fills with ice because it is where the water stops moving, not because of anything about the gutter itself. Houses with no gutters at all form ice dams, and the state code recognises the underlying condition: Michigan requires an ice barrier where the average daily January temperature is 25 degrees or below, or where there is a history of local damage from ice damming.

What follows here is the other half of the story: what that ice does to the gutter, the fascia and the roof edge, and which of it is worth spending money on.

How much does the ice actually weigh?

Enough to matter, and the arithmetic is worth doing because most people underestimate it badly.

Water weighs 62.4 pounds per cubic foot. Ice is slightly less dense — about 0.917 times water — so roughly 57 pounds per cubic foot.

Picture the ice mass that forms at a Michigan eave in a hard winter: not just a filled trough, but a block bridging the gutter and building back onto the roof edge above it. Take a conservative slab five inches deep and five inches wide running along the eave. That is 25 square inches of cross-section, or about 0.17 square feet. Over a 40-foot run, that is roughly 6.9 cubic feet, and at 57 pounds per cubic foot it comes to about 400 pounds.

That figure is an illustration from assumed dimensions rather than a measurement, and real ice masses at Michigan eaves are frequently larger. But it makes the point: 400 pounds hanging on the outer edge of a fascia board, applied as leverage on fasteners installed to hold a gutter full of water.

Nor is it a static load applied once. The University of Michigan’s GLISA program reports the Great Lakes region averaging about 42 freeze-thaw cycles a year over 1951 to 2020, ranging between roughly 23 and 60 depending on location. Every cycle loads and unloads those fasteners, and each thaw lets water into any gap the last one opened. Macomb and Oakland counties carry a 25 psf ground snow load in the state code tables, so there is real material up there to melt and refreeze.

Hangers, fasteners and where it fails

Ice loading exposes exactly one thing: how the gutter is attached, and to what.

The old spike-and-ferrule method — a long nail driven through both walls of the gutter into the fascia — is the classic failure. The spike works loose under repeated thermal cycling because the fascia moves and the nail does not grip when it comes back. Hidden hangers, which clip inside the gutter and screw into the fascia, do considerably better because a screw resists withdrawal in a way a nail does not. Where hangers land relative to the framing behind the fascia matters too: a screw into a rafter tail holds far better than one into a fascia board alone.

Spacing is the other half. Published figures vary between manufacturers and there is no single code number to cite, so the sensible approach is to tighten spacing on the elevations that actually take the load — north-facing runs and anything under a long valley where meltwater concentrates — rather than uniformly across the house.

What we look for on an inspection:

  • Gutters pulled away from the fascia at the top edge, or visibly sagging between fasteners.
  • Spikes backed out, or a line of empty holes where they have been driven back in more than once.
  • Sections that have shifted so the run no longer falls toward the outlet — a gutter is meant to slope at least 1/16 inch per foot toward its downspout, and ice movement destroys that pitch.
  • Separated or leaking seams and end caps, which ice expansion opens.
  • Downspouts detached at the top, or crushed at the elbow.

Fascia rot: the damage nobody sees until the gutter comes off

This is the expensive part, and it is invisible from the ground because the gutter covers it.

The sequence is consistent. Ice backs water up behind and above the gutter. That water gets behind the fascia — most easily where drip edge is missing or the gutter is mounted too high relative to the roof edge — and sits against wood in a location that never dries out in winter. Michigan requires drip edge at eaves and rake edges precisely because the roof edge is the detail that decides whether water gets behind the trim.

Then repeat it 42 times a year. Wet wood behind a gutter through a Michigan winter rots from the back forward, and by the time paint blisters or a fastener pulls through, the board has been failing for several seasons. ARMA notes that trapped moisture causes rot in framing, decking and ceilings — the same principle applies to the fascia and the soffit behind it.

The consequence for repair sequencing is important: hanging a new gutter on a rotted fascia is not a repair. The screws have nothing to hold. Any honest quote for gutter replacement on a house with visible ice history should include an allowance for what is found once the old gutter is down, in the same way a roof quote should price replacement decking. If it does not, that conversation is simply being deferred to the invoice. In Michigan, roofing and gutters are both named trade classifications on a Residential Maintenance & Alteration Contractor licence, so a single licensed contractor can properly handle the roof edge, the fascia, the soffit and the gutter as one detail.

What heat cable does, and what it does not

Worth being direct, because it is sold hard every winter.

Heat cable melts a channel through ice that has already formed. That channel gives trapped meltwater somewhere to go, which can genuinely prevent a leak on a house where the real fix is impractical — a cathedral ceiling with no attic to seal, a north-facing dormer valley that ices every year regardless.

What it does not do is prevent the dam. It touches none of the three DOE conditions: it does not remove the snow, it does not change the temperature, and it certainly does not air seal your attic. It runs on electricity through the coldest months, and installing it on a house with an unsealed attic floor means paying to heat the attic and then paying again to melt what that heat produces.

Two further honest notes. Cable in the gutter and downspout only, without a run up the roof edge, melts the trough but leaves the dam on the roof above it. And any cable is an electrical installation at the wettest part of the building, so it wants doing properly rather than run off an extension lead through a window.

Timing gutter work in Michigan

Late autumn is the priority window. A gutter cleared and checked after leaf fall and before the first sustained freeze goes into winter empty, which means meltwater during a January thaw has somewhere to go instead of ponding on a plug of frozen leaves. This is the highest-value hour anyone spends on a roofline all year, and it is worth pairing with a look at where the downspouts discharge — the DOE’s figures are at least 5 feet to sloping grade or 10 feet to a buried catchment, and a downspout that dumps at the wall in a thaw puts water into a foundation at the worst possible moment. Municipalities also take a dim view of discharge across public walks, which one Michigan city’s published rule notes causes icing conditions in freezing weather.

Spring is when you find out what happened. The right time to inspect for damage is right after the melt, while the evidence is fresh: sagging runs, pulled fasteners, opened seams, blistered fascia paint, and the pitch check that tells you whether ice moved the run. Damage found in April can be scheduled properly. The same damage found in November becomes an emergency.

Replacement is comfortable through the warmer months, and this is the sensible time to correct sizing, hanger spacing and fascia in one go rather than in pieces.

Winter work is possible and sometimes necessary. A gutter that has come off in January needs dealing with in January. Materials handle differently in cold, sealants have temperature limits, and ladder work over ice is genuinely hazardous — which is a reason to plan the job in the autumn, not a reason to leave a detached gutter hanging over a doorway until March.

One thing that should never be scheduled: chipping ice out of a gutter. Hammering or prying at a frozen trough damages the gutter, the fascia, the drip edge and the shingles above it, and does nothing about the mechanism. If water is actively coming into the house, deal with the interior, get the cause diagnosed, and plan the attic work for a season when it can be done properly.

Winter gutter questions

My gutters fill with ice every winter. Are they the wrong gutters?

Probably not. Ice at the eave comes from meltwater running off a roof warmed from below by escaping attic heat, and it forms on houses with any size of gutter and on houses with none. Check the attic first. Where the gutter does matter is in surviving the load — hanger type and spacing, fastener grip, and the condition of the fascia behind it.

Should I install heat cable?

It is mitigation, not prevention, and it is reasonable in a narrow set of cases — a cathedral ceiling with no attic to air seal, or a chronic valley or dormer that ices regardless. It melts a channel through a dam that has already formed. On a house with an accessible, unsealed attic floor, the same money spent on air sealing addresses the cause instead of the symptom.

How do I know if my fascia is rotted behind the gutter?

You often cannot see it, which is the problem. Indicators are a gutter pulling away at the top edge, fasteners that will not stay tight, blistered or peeling paint on the fascia, and a run that has lost its pitch. If any of those are present, the board wants checking before a new gutter is hung on it — screws into soft wood buy you one season.

When should gutters be cleaned in Michigan?

After leaf fall and before the first sustained freeze is the one that matters most, so the trough goes into winter empty and drains during a thaw. A second pass in spring is worth it for inspection as much as for cleaning, because that is when winter damage is visible and can still be scheduled calmly. Effective leaf protection reduces the autumn workload but does not remove the reason for the spring look.
